It had been a rather slow night in A&E and Hex had had plenty of time to chat with the other nurses. He'd been put off with the peds just because he was so good with the kiddies, but when warning bells went off in trauma Hex ran to where he was needed. The bloke was young and terribly thin and Hex got the distinct impression from the state of his hair and nails he was probably not well.

"I'm Hex," he said as two other nurses fussed over the young man, installing an IV and affixing EKG pads. "I just need to get a bit of history."

They went through the details and Hex took it all down, but what he was watching for with all this was to see how lucid Mr. Finlay Flynn was. The other nurses left before he got through the complete questionnaire.

"Almost done, Mr. Flynn," he said, then paused to look at the EKG printout. It wasn't good and the gravity of the situation settled heavy on his brow.

"You into music? I go to a lot of gigs. I saw Crystal Castles the other week, and my mate's got tickets to see Dragonforce next month, so that'll be brilliant," Fin said, offering a very small smile.

"I like music a lot, but I've never been to a concert. Not a proper one. I've seen musicians in bars and the like, and once when I was in Afghanistan they had a show with the newest incarnation of the Pussycat Dolls. Something of that was lost on me, though," he chuckled.

"You should go see a proper show sometime. There's nothing like it. Makes me feel alive to be in the front row with the sound vibrating through me," Fin admitted, deciding he'd just have chips and vinegar as he closed the menu.

"Who's your favorite? Or do like a variety of music?" Hex asked. He couldn't help that he kept studying Fin, thinking he was really quite lovely. His lips were so pink and the shape of his jaw so fine. And Hex knew he needed to not be thinking such things when Fin had been nothing but clear, but he reasoned he could think the man was attractive and still be just friends.

"Like a bit of everything, if I'm honest. Don't have favourites, just like whatever's good, yeah?" Fin shrugged, aware of how he was being studied, and finding he didn't mind it.

In fact, he sat up a little straighter, shoulders back as he rested his elbows n the table and his chin in his palm.

"Wot about you? You got a favourite?"

"Not really. I had a mate who really enjoyed the Sex Pistols so I like them, but more because they remind me of Ace than because I think they're any good," he replied. "Mainly I listen to the radio and enjoy what's on then forget it five minutes later."

"Yeah? Well, if we're gonna be mates I'll Have to do something about that," Fin grinned. "Tell you what, I'll make you a mix. You'll love it."

[just_hex]

"You'd make me a mix?" Hex said, a bit taken aback. He had mates and all, and they had good times, but none of them had ever done anything like that for him before. It was...kind. Kind in a way he wasn't accustomed to.

"I'd like that. A lot." More than a lot, but he didn't want to gush and frighten Fin away.

"Yeah? Cool," Fin replied, offering a faint smile, then falling silent as their waitress returned.

"Um, I think I'll just have a large side of chips. Oh, and can I have some vinegar for them?" he asked.

"Sure, love. We do fish you know. You don't fancy fish and chips?" she offered.

"Nah. Thanks though," Fin replied, not wanting to admit in front of Hex that his stomach might not keep fish down.

"Eggs Benedict for me, love," Hex said cheerfully. She smiled and scribbled it down.

"I could have guessed. You never get anything different when you've got the time to sit and wait," she said, then bustled off to see about their order.

"Are you vegetarian, then?" he asked. It was the only reason he'd think that Fin might decline the fish. Nothing against that- Hex tried to watch his own meat intake, but it was curious. Fin looked like a stiff breeze might blow him away. He could hardly afford to skip the fat and protein.

"Wot? No, just, uh, not in the mood I guess," Fin lied. "Chips sound brilliant though. I'm famished, mate."

"I can imagine. We' had you in for tests for so long. Usually people hit the vending machine on the way out, they're so thirsty. I should have offered you something but usually with heart tests they don't want you to eat or drink," Hex said. He reached up and scratched his chest, his mind going to the thought of a shower and something clean and fresh. He'd been in the scrubs for well over twelve hours, having done his own shift and then another half again as long when someone didn't show. Now that he was sitting...now was when his fatigue began to creep up on him and soon enough he yawned to try to keep himself alert.

"Sorry. Sorry, that snuck up on me."

"It's alright, mate. You must be tired. You live far from here? Long commute home?" Fin asked curiously, struggling not to watch the man scratch and yawn... It was oddly enticing, though he didn't know why.

"In Spitalfields. It's not that long on the Tube. It's just been a twelve hour day and I'm worn out," he said. "I'm going to eat and I'll be lucky if I don't fall asleep on the train."

"That's not so bad. I'm staying with a mate in Croydon at the moment. Gonna be a bloody long trek home," he admitted with a laugh. "Hope he's not started drinking yet. If he's passed out by the time I get there I'll be spending another night on his steps."

"You really shouldn't exert yourself with that monitor on...and I can't have you sleeping on steps, either. Say, I've got a couch. I get why you'd say no since I made a pass, but it's just a genuine offer. You could sleep on the couch until you've got to come back to turn the monitor in," he offered.

[prince_of_nymphs]

"Are you mental? I'm a total stranger. For all you know, I might rob ya," Fin pointed out, looking at Hex as if he'd grown a second head. "I mean, don't get me wrong, mate, I'm tempted, if nothing else, it saves me train fair, but- I dunno. It's not that you made a pass, just I don't want to take advantage of you is all. We don't even know each other really. I'm just some bloke you helped in A&E."

"I'm a fair judge of people, Finlay. I don't think you're going to stab me or rob me or even overstay your welcome. I look at you and I see a bloke who needs a hand, is all. A place to lay your head and maybe we'll turn out to be real mates after it all. And if not? Then that's alright, too. Come on, what do you say?" he pressed gently.

Fin hesitated, then finally offered a nod.

"Alright, suppose there's no harm in it," he agreed. "You're sure you don't mind? I mean- I don't want you offering just because you feel like you have to. I mean... It's proper kind of you."

"I really don't mind. I'll be glad for the company," Hex replied. He took up his tea and sipped it, only then realizing he hadn't put any sugar in it. He rectified that issue right away and stirred the hot drink slowly.

"I like games. I've got a few different consoles. Do you play?" he asked. He wasn't sure he'd be awake long enough to play anything, but he could get Fin set up if he liked.

"Yeah, I play a bit," Fin said, smiling as the server put his chips down in front of him. "I reckon I'll get a system when I finally get my own place," he added.

"Right now I only get to play at my mate's house now and then."

"I started playing in the army. When we weren't out on tour we were basically trapped in the base, and there's only so much they allow the medics to do. We never had guard duty or anything like that so we had a lot of time to play. I love God Of War, and Arkham Asylum. I like the Lego games, too," he said, digging into his dish. There was no way he could hide his enthusiasm even if he'd wanted to. To his mind there was no shame in it. He worked hard and he kept fit so if he wanted to spend his free time shooting monsters then he was going to.

"I like adventure games myself," Fin admitted eating another chip. "Like I said though, I don't get to play often, Well, except when I'm the hospital. Then I get to play quite a bit."

[just_hex]

"And how often does that happen?" Hex asked. He used his knife and fork to cut up his food all at once rather than bite by bite. It made a mess, all yolks and sauce mixed together.

"Every few months," Fin replied. "I'll have a bad episode and I get hauled off to A&E. Hasn't happened in a while though, today was the first time in a while."
