They'd set another date and Hex was excited. Maybe more excited than he had any right to be. Spencer was a puzzle, to be sure, but Hex felt he was worth working out. He'd done a bit of reading up on Autism and he found some things fit and some didn't so he was left unsure. He reasoned that was a good indication he should stay in nursing and to leave the diagnoses to the doctors.
Spencer was due any minute and Hex had sprang for pizza and some Cokes. He'd set out plates and such and then settled on the sofa to catch up on the sports scores while he waited for Spencer to come round. If only he could stop checking his watch.

"When I was in the army I could sleep through anything. Since I got shot, though...well, it's different now, yeah? I sleep with a light on, too."

Date: 2014-08-05 03:34 am (UTC)"I think the thing that bothers me most about getting shot was I didn't see it coming," he said quietly. "That's when I get nervous, yeah? When I'm trying to guess if it's going to happen again. But my therapist says that a lot of people who have trauma do that."
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 03:41 am (UTC)Spencer understood that all too well, and he nodded a little in understanding.
"I get that way too. I remember turning around and finding myself face to face with him- and then he struck me... and the world went dark. I don't think I'd ever considered myself fragile until that moment. I'd been beaten up and tormented all my life, but I was always okay. I always got back up. I nearly didn't that time."
He was silent for a long moment, then wet his lips. "If it's any comfort at all, statistically speaking, it's unlikely you'll ever be shot again."
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 03:45 am (UTC)"I don't know the statistics but I'd guess it's pretty unlikely you'll ever be taken again, either," he said, gently rubbing Spencer's leg. "Funny how knowing that doesn't change how you feel, yeah? I think the only time I'm not thinking about actually getting shot is when I play games like this. It's all escape. Just for fun."

Date: 2014-08-05 03:50 am (UTC)Spencer looked down at Hex's hand on his leg, hesitating, and then covering it with his own- then holding it and squeezing gently.
In that moment, he felt so close to Hex, and without thinking, he leaned in and kissed the other man on the lips.

Date: 2014-08-05 03:54 am (UTC)Hex's eyes slipped shut and he kissed Spencer back. This was actually the most connection he'd ever felt with anyone and it put him a bit off balance so he didn't press for more. He only took what Spencer gave willingly, making a small sound of pleasure and surprise as he savored the softness of the man's mouth.

Date: 2014-08-05 03:57 am (UTC)Spencer let the kiss linger, then pulled away slowly, looking almost bashful.
"I can't promise I'll be ready to be intimate, but- If you wanted, I could stay tonight. We could see if we sleep better together," he offered, not sure what Hex would say to that.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:00 am (UTC)"I'd like that. I'd like that a lot," he said with a small, shy smile. "I haven't spent the night with anyone in ages. And I think the last time I did it was an accident."
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 04:10 am (UTC)"By accident?" Spencer asked, laughing a little, but relaxing when Hex didn't baulk at the idea.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:14 am (UTC)"You know...when you hook up and don't mean to stay, but you both fall asleep..." he said, then realized Spencer didn't actually know what that was like.
"It only happened once...and I was really drunk that night," he added, trying to make it better but realizing as he spoke that it only made him sound that much more irresponsible and wanton.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:23 am (UTC)"I've never had anyone stay here before," he said. "You'll be the first."
He kind of wanted to drag Spencer to bed now, just to lay with him and feel him close. But it was still insanely early and there was no good excuse to try to sleep at this hour.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:26 am (UTC)Spencer smiled brightly at that, feeling quite honoured as he moved to pick up his controller again.
"Should we play?" he asked.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:30 am (UTC)Being on the receiving end of Spencer's smile was like standing in the warmth of the sun on the first day winter broke and everything began to grow in the spring. Hex felt positively alive.
"Yeah, let's," he said, taking up his controller and starting the game. "We'll do the tutorial first so you can get the controls down."
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 04:35 am (UTC)Spencer nodded, but a tutorial and dozens of disastrous attempts later, it became clear that this wasn't something the young doctor was likely to master.
"I don't think I have the eye-hand coordination for this," he frowned. "My aim is worse with this than it is with an actual gun."
At least twice he'd managed to kill Hex instead of the enemy. Spencer was fairly certain that wasn't how you were supposed to play the game.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:39 am (UTC)Hex was having a grand time. He was laughing, but not laughing at Spencer. It was just brilliant. But he could see the other man's frustration and he nodded.
"I've got a good strategy game if you like. You have to do puzzles in the right order so you can collect gems and make a pillar," he said. "It's really quite a challenge..."
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 04:41 am (UTC)"Oh, sure," Spencer replied, not wanting to be rude, though it was clear he didn't want to play any more. The games console just wasn't entertaining for him.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:45 am (UTC)Hex was quite adept at picking up on signals, though, and he could tell Spencer wasn't that eager.
"Or we could see what's on telly," he offered. As he spoke he couldn't help but watch Spencer's mouth. He wanted to kiss him again so badly.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:49 am (UTC)Spencer perked up at that, glancing at the time. "There's a documentary coming up on channel four," he chirped. "It's about the British rail system."
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 04:52 am (UTC)Hex didn't even ask how Spencer just knew that. He just killed the PS3 and clicked it to channel four.
"Would you like some more coke?" he asked, rising to get some for himself.
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 04:59 am (UTC)"No thank you," Spencer said, shaking his head and getting comfortable as he settled in on the sofa. "You know, the first use of steam locomotives was in Britain. The earliest "railways" were completely straight and were constructed from timber that people rode on in horse-drawn carts. Those were made obsolete in 1793 when Benjamin Outram constructed a mile-long tramway with L-shaped cast iron rails- Which were in turn replaced again when William Jessop began to manufacture cast iron rails without guiding ledges. However, cast iron is brittle, and in 1820, John Birkenshaw introduced a method of rolling wrought iron rails, which were used from then on," he said, happily chatting away.

Date: 2014-08-05 05:03 am (UTC)He was glad to listen, always happy to learn something. Hex returned with his coke and sat down, close enough to Spencer that he could casually touch him and open enough that the other man could get closer if he liked.
"I know London had the first underground train in the world," he offered. "That's on a plaque at one of the stops."
no subject
Date: 2014-08-05 01:57 pm (UTC)Spencer nodded, and cautiously settled in a little closer. He was almost resting against Hex as the documentary started, still chatting away and feeling comfortable.

Date: 2014-08-05 04:26 pm (UTC)As the doc went on Hex stretched out here and leaned a bit there and soon enough he had an arm around Spencer and he was pressed in close. The show was interesting but certainly nothing he'd have ever chosen to watch on his own. And he wasn't really watching it now...he was busy feeling Spencer and enjoying the scent of his hair.
