Hex had been sneaking texts to Corbin in between patients. The man wasn't answering, probably working, so he sent one more message.

I'll be home after 8. Going to gym. Maybe I'll see you <3

He couldn't get enough of the other man. He wanted to see him all the time. He was always on Hex's mind.

He hit the gym and did his usual circuit, then showered. That was when he checked his phone to see if he'd be alone tonight.

"So what?" Corbin asked with a grin, looking up at Hex- Then flinching at the sudden knock at his front door.

There were only a few people who got past the doorman without being buzzed up first- And since one of them was currently in his bed, that meant it could only be Jared, or...

"Shit," he whispered, sitting up and reaching for his robe.

It wasn't the knock but Corbin's reaction that had adrenaline hit him hard. He was ready to fight in a flash.

"Who is it?" Hex asked, sure of the answer.

"Just- No one... I mean, someone, obviously, just- Just wait here, I'll get rid of him," Corbin said, looking flustered and tightening his robe before heading back out to the living room.

He shut the bedroom door most of the way, heading over to the front door and yanking it open.

"I told you to call before coming over from now on," he said, rather than hello.

"And I told you I'd try and remember," came a man's voice. "Were you sleeping at this hour? Thought they had you on that new workout regimen..."

"Why do you know that?" Corbin asked, sounding exasperated, rather than annoyed. "Why are you here, Walt?"

There was the sound of footsteps as Walt invited himself in. "You said you would sort out my books, I'm just here to collect them."

Corbin let out a mildly annoyed groan. "I don't have them, I told you they're in the shared storage unit."

"...Which I no longer have access too," Walt countered.

"Then call my assistant, don't show up at my door an-"

Corbin was cut off as Walt caught hold of him and kissed him soundly.

"Do we have to pretend to fight every time I stop by?" Walt asked as he pulled away, leaving Corbin looking a bit disheveled.

"We can't- You can't keep dropping by. I can't keep doing this, Walt," Corbin insisted softly, trying to make sure Hex couldn't hear. "We both agreed, this relationship isn't good for us, either of us."

Hex could hear, but he couldn't really hear. He heard enough to know it was Walt, though. He slipped out of bed and put on his trousers, not willing to get into a fight naked.

He listened to the sounds and debated going out or not. It would only cause problems. But maybe Walt would get the idea that Corbin was involved. Maybe he'd know to back off.

Or maybe it would make things worse.

He stepped near the bedroom door to properly eavesdrop.

"If we're so terrible for one another, Corbin, why did you come see me last week?" Walter asked.

Corbin went pink and ducked his head. "I came to- I know how it ended, but that wasn't why I came over, I just... Old habits, alright?"

Walt stepped closer, leaning in to kiss him again- And Corbin nearly leaned in to meet him.

"I have someone over, you can't be here," Corbin blurted out, prompting Walter to draw away and quirk a brow.

"Do you?" Walter asked with a smirk. "Wicked boy. You have to let me meet them. ...God, it's not that dreadful club kid you were fucking when we seperated, is it? He was dreadful."

"No. ...And no, you have to go, okay? I'll tell Jared you need to use the storage unit. ...Just please, go, I can't do this today," Corbin insisted.

Hex began to open the door, but then caught sight of them. Walt was...older. Older, even, than Hex had grasped. And then the man leaned in and Hex couldn't see Corbin, but it was obviously a kiss...

Hex turned away to get his shirt on, certain he was going to be asked to leave.

A moment later and Corbin returned, closing the bedroom door behind him.

"God, sorry about that," he apologized. "I didn't know he was going to try and drop in, honest."

Hex had his shirt in hand, twisting it and tugging it to turn it right side out.

"Don't worry about it. I should go," he said quietly.

"...Oh," Corbin replied. "Alright, um- I can get dressed and walk you down if you like? Do they need you back at work, or-"

He trailed off awkwardly, hoping Hex hadn't heard him and Walt.

"Don't be daft, Corbin. You're out there snogging your husband. Which is fine. I get it," he said as he pulled his shirt on.

It hurt, but he wasn't upset. He was a good time until he wasn't, he knew that. But it hurt because he'd let himself think it might be more.

Corbin winced, ducking his head.

"You saw that. ...Fuck, Hex, I'm sorry- I swear though, it's not- We're not together, me and Walt. Just sometimes when we see each other- Old habits, you know? I'm sorry," he apologized softly.

"It's...if you ask me, it's a bad idea. He's abusive, Corbin. But you have a lifetime with him. So I get it," he said.

"He's not, but I do know it's not good," Corbin assured him. "...Please don't go, Hex."

"He's going to be on your mind all night. I can't compete with that. I can't make him go away."

But he didn't go. He didn't really want to go. But he didn't want to wonder all night if Corbin was wishing Hex was someone else.

Corbin looked gutted, and sat down on the edge of the bed.

"I swear, I tried to cut him out, but- God, you'll think I'm so fucking pathetic saying this... He knows how to handle me," Corbin said quietly. "He just knows, he always has, and that is so hard to let go of, Hex. I know we're shit for one another, but no one has ever just understood me the way he did, and it's going to take time for me to let that go for good."

"I don't think it's pathetic," he said, moving a little closer. Closer still, until he could rest his hand on him.

"He offers structure, doesn't he?" he asked.

Corbin nodded slightly, pushing his hair back and looking away.

"I've had a lot of issues over the years. ...Drugs, mostly. Walt would always pull me back in when I got too out of control. He'd do whatever he had to to get me sober, not always in conventional ways. Some people might say it bordered on abusive, but I wouldn't. Walt probably saved my life, to be honest."

"Why did you get divorced, Corbin?" Hex asked. He hadn't before, and until now, he hadn't really wanted to know. It seemed necessary now.

"Walt didn't like the direction I wanted to take my career. Thought I should stick to the stage when I could. Was always going on about being one of the greats, not a sell out, but- Theater doesn't always pay well, and I like nice things, you know? I'm not ashamed of that. ...So we'd fight, he'd disapprove, try and change my mind. While I was in America shooting that Agatha Christie film I hooked up with someone. Walt was pissed, but he forgave me, and we fell back into bed a week later- But it was exciting, being with someone new. Walt's been my whole world since I was barely out of school, and suddenly I was looking at other people, wondering what I missed out on, you know? Eventually we separated, and then I asked for a divorce. I was kind of shocked when Walt agreed. ...But he's never walked away altogether, you know? And I- um. I miss him sometimes," he confessed.

He'd been right. He didn't want to know. Everything Corbin said made him feel worse. He'd been fancying that this might be like falling in love. Now he thought he was probably just a bit of excitement. Something new. And he didn't know why that bothered him so much. He hadn't even been looking for a relationship...

"I think being independent is a good choice, yeah? He can't run your life."
